Hamburg University of Technology 

The 2023 edition of the Embedded Systems Week will take place on the campus of Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). TUHH was founded in 1978 as an independent university specialized in the “classical” engineering sciences. The university has an interdisciplinary and industrial focus with a third of its budget coming from external sources. TUHH has around 100 professors, 1,450 employees (including 750 academic staff) and around 7,400 students. With more than 1,200 international students, the university has a very strong international orientation.

The key areas of expertise of TUHH are Aviation and Maritime Systems, Green Technologies and Life Science Technologies. As a cross-cutting discipline, all aspects related to Digitization are of strategic importance for TUHH. The School of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics is responsible for foundational research in this domain with a particular focus on embedded and cyber-physical systems. This research is closely linked to TUHH’s Engineering Schools focusing on application domains like, e.g., avionics, mechatronics, medical systems, or materials.

The City of Hamburg

With more than 5 millions of inhabitants in the entire metropolitan region and 1.8 million of people living within the city limits, Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city. Since the medieval ages where Hamburg was member of the Hanseatic League, the city’s history has been characterized by maritime trade and internationality. Hamburg is located in northern Germany, approx. 100km away from the North Sea coast, and lies on the River Elbe. Since the river is wide enough even for huge container ships, Hamburg is Germany’s largest and economically most relevant harbor. The city fascinates by its diversity and the many heterogeneous facets that wish to be discovered. The city as a whole exudes a maritime character (Hamburg features more bridges than Amsterdam and Venice altogether), but always with surprisingly different flavors.

    • Chilehaus, an architectural highlight from 1924, an ancient headquarter of a shipping/trading company in expressionistic style
  • Speicherstadt and HafenCity:
    • Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, the publicly open gallery offers a great panorama over the harbor
    • Ancient storehouses with museums, to be discovered by walking through the entire quarter
    • Miniatur Wunderland or Hamburg Dungeons for fans of miniature train landscapes or thrilling impressions
    • HafenCity: A modern and urban district where the old harbor has been completely rebuilt and turned into a vibrant quarter with maritime atmosphere
  • Sankt Pauli: The lively harbor district with various possibilities for diversion
    • Landungsbrücken: The harbor’s major traffic hub where river taxis arrive and depart (free of use for ESWEEK attendees, are included in the public transportation ticket!), boat trips through the container harbor and/or Speicherstadt can be booked, plenty of fish restaurants etc. Landungsbrücken will also be the destination where both the TPC dinner on Monday and the Social Event on Tuesday will terminate.
    • Portuguese quarter: Lots of restaurants and bars of countless international styles and flavors
    • Rickmer Rickmers: Ancient sail ship, open for visitors
    • Cap San Diego: Ancient cargo ship, open for visitors
    • Sankt Pauli Elbtunnel: Ancient tunnel below the river dating back to 1911
    • Michaeliskirche “Michel”: Very beautiful landmark of the Sankt Pauli harbor district, the church tower offers a stunning panorama over the entire city
    • Stage Theater(s): The destination for musical fans, with events like the Lion King, Hamilton, Mamma Mia, Disney’s Snow Queen
    • Reeperbahn: The amusement district of Hamburg with cabarets, variety shows, bars and night clubs
